Like every sport, volleyball has rules. The rules of each sport is to ensure fairness, competition, and safety for the players. Each sport has a basic set of rules to ensure these, but, like other sports, volleyball has some other rules that make you push yourself to be the best you can be.
Volleyball has the basic rules that other sports have and ones that are unique to volleyball. Some of the basics:
- Don’t be disrespectful to your coach, teammates, and the opponents
- Limited number of player on each actively playing team (6)
- Don’t cross to the other side of the net -> no tackling other players, especially on your own team!
- Don’t let the volleyball go out (out of bounds)
Volleyball also has its unique rules. Some of the unique rules:
- Only 3 touches per side (reset after the opponents his the ball)
- No touching the net when hitting the volleyball during a play or the other team will get the point
- No touching the volleyball when the opponents hit it out on your side of the net
- Serving is only permitted anywhere behind the back line of the court
- No blocking or spiking a serve
- No continuing to hit the ball when your teammate serves but it doesn’t go over the net
- If the ball is heading out, and your teammate hit it out, dive for the ball to get the point
- Must rotate clockwise every time the you win a point after the opposing team had scored
- If you have 7+ teammates and you are on the back left side when you rotate, you got on the bench and your teammate goes to the upper left side
- Players are not permitted to kick the volleyball was sliding unless you play on a college or professional team
