Most students these days have played volleyball, basketball, soccer, and baseball/softball either during recess or their Physical Education class (P.E.) without knowing the history behind them. The history of each sport is rather interesting, volleyball in particular.
William G. Morgan was the physical director of YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) who invented mintonette (later named volleyball) in 1895. William G. Morgan invented volleyball for the businessmen who though basketball to be too vigorous. It was originally designed as an indoor sport but beach volleyball was later created in 1915.
After volleyball’s popularity grew, it was added to olympic status in 1957. The first olympic volleyball game was played in the Tokyo 1964 games. The Soviet Union Olympic team won bronze in 1964 and silver in 1968. Japan then was the gold medal in 1972.
